SUCCESS MARKS THE 5TH ANNIVERSARY OF BKLYN DESIGNS™ Thousands Filled Streets of DUMBO to Embrace Brooklyn Furniture Designers
(Click here to find out about the special events at the 2007 show.)
(Brooklyn, NY – May 25, 2007) More than 6,500 people including media and members of the design trade converged on DUMBO May 11 – 13 to kick off New York Design Week at BKLYN DESIGNS™ 2007. The three-day show, presented annually by the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, featured a record number of exhibitors and drew the biggest crowd since the show premiered in 2003. There was excitement in the air as masses of eager design-lovers from all over the world trekked up and down the cobblestone streets of DUMBO to see the best furniture, lighting, floor/wall coverings, accessories and sustainable products the borough has to offer.
According to Mark Kessler, interim president and chief operating officer of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, “BKLYN DESIGNS truly represents the entrepreneurial spirit that thrives throughout this borough. This year, we saw 35 returning exhibitors and welcomed 29 newcomers – a testament to the overwhelming success of the show. Now with the launch of the BKLYN DESIGNS Center at the Greenpoint Manufacturing and Design Center (GMDC) McKibbin Street – the only not-for-profit industrial developer in New York City – emerging Brooklyn designers and manufacturers have access to below market industrial space secured by long-term leases. This is all part of an effort to ensure our home-grown talent and quality craftsmen continue to manufacturer and flourish in Brooklyn.”
As tradition has it, wood is associated with a five-year anniversary. BKLYN DESIGNS exhibitors took this classic material to new heights using reclaimed, recycled or responsibly harvested varieties in envelope-pushing designs for home and office. It was evident designers pushed their creativity even further with other material innovations, displaying hand-crafted lighting inspired by urban landscapes of dilapidated building façades and graffiti art from Re-Surface; hip sustainable baby/children‘s furniture from Argington; lighting made from honey jars from Nicholas Furrow; whimsical gun-shot mirrors from Paul Loebach; a modern side table with built-in lighting from A&G Design; hairy monster-inspired rugs and wing-back chairs from Longoland; sleek glass tables with overscale turned legs from Robert Austin Gonzalez; an innovative exhibit of work including glass handrails and lights by first-time exhibitor Brooklyn Glass (a collective of glass artists); and eclectic furnishings with matching skateboards all made from recycled materials by Daniel Moyer Design & Fabrication.
With 19,000 square feet of exhibit space, 1000+ pre-registered members of the trade, packed lectures and three heavily trafficked venues filled with patrons throughout the sunny weekend, it was clear this show had much more to celebrate than its five-year milestone.
First-time exhibitor Lois Ruben Aronow said, “This was a great show on many levels. Aside from the obvious, which for me included several incredible commissions, I made some really great media, business and artistic contacts. The attendance was head spinning. Friends and neighbors aside, I met people who had come from different parts of the country just to attend this show. The buyers/attendees understood the work they were looking at. Finally, I found the crowd that really understands my work!”
Corey Springer of Wud Furniture Design shared his enthusiasm saying, “BKLYN DESIGNS was once again a great experience for Wud Furniture Design. It is always inspiring to be surrounded by all the emerging talent that is coming out of Brooklyn. While the show keeps getting bigger every year, the event still feels intimate and I think that is appealing to both the designers and the attendees. It is also great to meet new people from the community, as well as see the familiar faces from years past.”
According to returning exhibitor David Scott of DESU Design, “We were pleasantly overwhelmed with the show attendance this year. In fact, we ran out of our promotional materials, which has never happened to us at a trade show before! Overall, we had a lot of positive feedback and a great mix of new and return customers.”
Bill Hilgendorf of Uhuru Design was back for the third year: “It was great to come back to BKLYN DESIGNS with a bigger booth and a brand new line of furniture. We grew so much in the last year due to exposure from the show. Our design calendar now is totally determined by BKLYN DESIGNS. We use it as an opportunity to launch all of our new products. Brooklyn is a great design community and I think the show is responsible for making it stronger every year. We are already looking forward to next year's show.”
Finally, the show included an informative series of design lectures and seminars led by industry icons and editors at top-notch shelter and lifestyle magazines. The respected Ralph Pucci of Ralph Rucci International and Linda O’Keeffe, director, Design + Architecture Metropolitan Home set the standard with an inspiring keynote.
There was standing room only as a crowd poured in to attend a Pratt Institute session, What’s Next? Today’s Hot Sustainable Designers and Educators from Pratt Institute Look at How the Next Generation Will Differ, moderated by Fred Bernstein as well as Dwell’s hands-on session, Going Green: Daunting or Doable, moderated by Michael Cannell.
“I sat in on some lectures on Saturday and made it a point to come back again on Sunday,” said Aki Okado, architect, Point Design, Inc. “It was great to see such a big emphasis on green design.”

BROOKLYN CHAMBER CALLS FOR EXHIBITOR APPLICATIONS Five Years of Innovative Design
(Brooklyn, NY – November, 2006) The Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce the fifth edition of BKLYN DESIGNS™ that will once again kick off the much-anticipated NY Design Week. Next year’s show, May 11 – 13, 2007, will take place at several DUMBO locations including St. Ann’s Warehouse. The annual three-day show will feature a growing roster of Brooklyn-based designers and manufacturers of contemporary furnishings, including indoor and outdoor furniture, rugs, lighting and accessories, all selected by a jury of industry professionals. Based on the success of last year’s focus on “green” design, sustainable materials and products will again be an integral part of the show’s program.
BKLYN DESIGNS has grown dramatically since its inception – doubling its attendance in just four years. Last year, the show broke records as more than 6,000 visitors flooded the streets of DUMBO, Brooklyn, a bourgeoning mecca for cutting-edge design. Each year BKLYN DESIGNS showcases a jury-selected group of leading Brooklyn-made products, and serves as the stage for the industry’s hottest newcomers as well as many veterans.
In its September 2006 issue, Dwell said, “BKLYN DESIGNS weekend...confirmed that good design is the subject of much thought in New York City’s biggest borough.” The Architect’s Newspaper added, “Until BKLYN DESIGNS started four years ago, no one could be sure of the scope or character of the borough’s creative output.”
“This is a landmark year. To celebrate our fifth anniversary we are planning a number of new initiatives that will showcase the event’s evolution and growth. The focus of the show, however, will remain the same – to highlight the best contemporary home furnishing designers and manufacturers in Brooklyn,” said Mark Kessler, Interim President of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce. “We will continue to curate the show, carefully working with our outstanding advisory board to surpass the level of design excellence that’s become synonymous with the event. This consistent and deliberate focus sets the show apart, making it popular with both New York metro area consumers as well as discerning design industry professionals from around the world.”
According to veteran exhibitor and owner of Standard 41, Andrew Raible, “Of all the shows I participate in, BKLYN DESIGNS is the only one that results in year-long response. I have a steady stream of work throughout the year from people who saw me there last spring. As someone who has participated in the show since the very beginning, I can honestly say the quality has always been high, but there is a marked increase in sophistication with each year.”
The Chamber has put out a call for exhibitors. Interested Brooklyn-based manufacturers and designers should visit the Web site at http://www.brooklyndesigns.net/exhibit.htm to download the 2007 application form. The jury, made up of leading design professionals including editors from top shelter and design publications, will review exhibitor applications in late December 2006. Show organizers are working to put together an expanded series of panels and seminars, and are making connections with local business to create what is sure to be an action-packed schedule of events.

BKLYN DESIGNS™ 2006 DRAWS CROWD Green Design, New Firms Add to Buzz

With 55 exhibitors, two venues and satellite events all over the neighborhood, the show was the talk of the town. Presented by the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, the 4th annual event featured the borough’s finest designers and manufacturers of contemporary furniture, lighting, rugs and decorative accessories, including some of the most cutting-edge sustainable products.
According to Kenneth Adams, President of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, “With each year the show grows to surpass our expectations. The response has been overwhelming with so many visitors commenting on the excellence of the exhibits and products on display. BKLYN DESIGNS’ growth as a trade show reflects the development of our borough’s creative economy. Many returning exhibitors now credit the show for successfully launching their businesses. Newcomers tell us they are thrilled with the leads and contacts made. At the Chamber, we are so proud to have a role in assisting these talented designers to make their mark.”
After his Sunday visit, renowned designer Benjamin Noriega Ortiz said, “This was my first year and I loved it. Meeting the designers and furniture makers in person makes a huge difference when specifying the product. The difference between this fair and the others is that at BKLYN DESIGNS we have the great potential for custom work. I found innovative items that I can't wait to specify in my new projects.”
Move over Philippe Stark…BKLYN DESIGNS 2006 was the coming out party for several of the city’s hottest new furnishings designers. Brand new work on display included Small Factory Design’s whimsical children’s furniture, unique ceramic pieces from Perch!, Lighten Up!’s gorgeous porcelain table lamps, elegant custom mosaics from Brad Teasdale and one-of-a-kind furnishings from Palo Samko.
According to another newcomer Rob Day, “This has been a phenomenal experience. I showed my very first collection here. The contacts I have made and the interest I have received is really kicking off my business. I met with everyone from homeowners, to architects and designers, even a hotel developer. I’m thrilled.”
“This has been my life’s dream. No one, other than my friends and family, has seen my work before. The organization and production of this show was top notch. The caliber of visitors was great, and the access I had to potential clients was excellent,” said Boa of Object Interiors.
While this year’s exhibitor line-up included 23 new companies, many others returned from previous years. As Jill Ayers of everyspace put it, “We had such a great response. There seems to be a genuine interest in our work, particularly the green story. It’s clear the audience was very knowledgeable and savvy. The overall quality of the show, both products and displays, increases with every year.”
“I’ve been coming to BKLYN DESIGNS for the past three years,” said DWR visual merchandiser Cammi Climaco. “This is the best show to date. It looks and feels like it was carefully curated, and it’s a manageable show making it easy to find new talent. Best of all it’s cozy and feels like a tight-knit community.”
The show also included an informative series of design lectures and seminars, from Rima Suqi’s lively panel on design and commerce to Jen Renzi’s discussion on kitchen design. “Our seminar series was the most successful one to date. All the panels and lectures were extremely well attended, and keynote speaker, Cameron Sinclair, co-founder of Architecture for Humanity, packed the house,” added Mr. Adams.

BROOKLYN DESIGNS™ 2005: HAILED AS “CAN’T MISS EVENT FOR DESIGN IN NEW YORK” DUMBO SHOWCASE FEATURES 47 DESIGN INDUSTRY LEADERS (Brooklyn, NY – May, 2005) The streets of DUMBO were buzzing this weekend as design professionals and curious consumers headed to the hippest of New York hoods for Brooklyn Designs™ 2005. Presented by the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, the show featured Brooklyn’s brightest design stars. Designers and manufacturers of contemporary furniture, lighting, rugs and decorative accessories strutted their stuff in two locations - St. Ann’s Warehouse and the newly renovated and expanded Brooklyn Designs™ Gallery.
The show attracted 4,400 qualified buyers, architects, designers and consumers. According to Kenneth Adams, president of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, “Once again the show exceeded all of our expectations. The overwhelming feeling was that the show is really maturing. We kept hearing over and over again how impressed the attendees were with the overall look of the exhibits as well as the quality of the work being shown. Brooklyn Designs™ has clearly staked its claim not only on the borough but the design industry overall.”
Innovative products on display celebrated new materials and ideas. Some of the crowd pleasers included: everyspace’s lounge chairs that can be broken down into compact pieces in a matter of seconds; Glide’s high-tech colorful cabinets that use fingerprint recognition for access; Bart Bettencourt’s lights made from recycled scraps of wood; Here There Design’s delicate light fixtures created with innovative abaca fiber from palm fronds; Aswoon’s room dividers crafted in metal and curved wood; Oso Design’s lightweight rolling cement stools; Decoradar’s bucolic wall treatment, that upon closer inspection, featured playful hidden images and Asterisk’s Venetian plastered wallcoverings.
In the words of one visitor, Art Osborne, an interior designer from Westport, CT, “I came to the show last year and was even more impressed this time around. I met people who live, breath, eat and sleep their craft. These exhibitors are extremely talented and as a designer finding them is truly a godsend.”
Jill Ayers of everyspace, a new exhibitor, said, “We have been so overwhelmed by the amount of positive feedback we’ve received from attendees, not just retailers and buyers but also consumers. All of our work is modular. Visitors were intrigued by the flexibility of the design and the materials.”
Manabu Inada of Forest Hills, Queens had this to say: “It’s so interesting to see the great mix of natural materials and cutting edge technology. Some of these designers are using things like biotechnology concepts in furniture. The work is very professional and sophisticated. I am a designer myself, and I learned a lot at the show about how to move my business forward.”
Elana Frankel, Senior Editor for Architecture and Design at Metropolitan Home Magazine and a member of the Brooklyn Designs™ jury, added her thoughts, “I was really impressed with the quality of the products and the exhibits on display. The show has grown up so much in three years. It was a pleasure to walk the halls.”
While this year's exhibitor line-up included 19 newcomers – some that used Brooklyn Designs™ to launch their businesses – many “veterans” also returned to the show. As Azy Schecter of KEA Carpets & Kilims put it, "This was our third year at Brooklyn Designs™ and we got some great response. We had a constant flow of people through our space. We were excited to see that so many people had made it across the bridge for the show.” Her partner Susan Gomersall added, “It was like a high school reunion for the design world. Everyone was here.”
